THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL

The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, August 6, 2006 at 7:15pm. Those present were Chairman Herb Whitlow, Pastor Dottie, Ernestine Adams, Carolyn Edwards, Betty Fergola, Nelta and Steve Hennessey, Jan Kieffer, Jeanette Johnson, Donna Johnston, Neva Martin, Willa Norwood, Carole Stone, Carolyn Tindall, Nancy Rush.
Chairman Herb opened the meeting and conducted the devotional time. He shared a reading from the Upper Room and portions of Paul’s letter to the Philippians in instructing Timothy to spring forward to what is ahead and focus on reaching goals.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved by council as printed.
Jeanette (Finance) reviewed the June and July treasurer’s report.
It was moved and approved by council to pay institutional askings on a timely basis rather than waiting until the end of the year.
Jeanette also reported for Finance Committee that a time line had been set for the finance campaign. The Thanks-For-Giving Dinner is set for September 10 followed by presentations each of three weeks prior to Consecration Sunday, November 5.
Neva (Mission) mentioned some needs for Fellowship, Inc. She also told of a special offering to be collected on August 27 for Katrina relief to support pastors and the rebuilding of churches.
Neva (Health Ministry) told of an opportunity for our church to acquire the services of a parish nurse. We would share services with Berryton UMC. We will need to apply for two grants which will provide funds to set up materials and supplies and to pay full salary for the nurse during the first year and half her salary the second year. Carolyn Tindall, R.N. passed out to council information sheets regarding her training and the grant application procedure. Carolyn pointed out that she would be a resource for health education, referral to the health system, would maintain office hours, make home visits, and assist the pastor with hospital visits. A motion was made and approved by council to apply for these grants. The committee will request assistance from Jenny Buss in making the grant applications.
Ernestine (Education) reported that Katie Kroenke will continue to serve in our nursery through the month of August, but wasn’t yet committing beyond that time as she has accepted a full time teaching position. There is always is need for volunteers to assist in the nursery during worship.  Ernestine said that August 20 is Christian Education Sunday and a special offering will be collected to support training of lay people through the conference.
Discovery Club has completed enrollment for the coming year. There are 25 students (K-4) and 11 students (5-6). About half of those enrolled are new to the program. There will be a Discovery Club team meeting at 4:00pm on Tuesday, August 22. Discovery Club will begin with students on Tuesday, September 5.
Ernestine also reported that repair had been completed on the elevator and that a key is no longer necessary to operate.
Carole (Congregational Care) reminded council that next Sunday (Aug. 13) is visitation Sunday. The Community Ice Cream Social is August 27. The Glory Land Quartet will provide entertainment. A sign up sheet to assist with this event was passed.
Betty announced that apple dumplings for the Fall Festival will be prepared on Mondays and Fridays, beginning on Friday after Labor Day. Orders need to be turned in as soon as possible.
A Disaster Planning Report was discussed. Neva and Herb met with a Red Cross representative who would like our church to be designated a Red Cross shelter. It was moved and approved by council for the committee to proceed with plans.
Chairman Herb discussed planning for the fall and winter. There will be a Sunday School breakfast/planning meeting on August 20. He would like to schedule a planning meeting for October. Herb announced a pot luck dinner on August 19 at 6:00pm to honor Tom Romig and Shirley Atteberry to show our appreciation for their musical contributions to Sunday worship.  Herb also mentioned the need for a brochure with information about our church and community. It was pointed out that Betty Waller is also working on this project and council will discuss this again at a later meeting.
Pastor Dottie said that a date for church conference in the fall has not yet been set. She will be attending the installation service for the new district superintendent on Sept. 10 at 4:00 at Holton UMC and invited all to attend.
It was moved and approved by council to hold the September Super Sunday on September 3 even though it is a holiday week end due to the conflict with the installation on Sept. 10.
For the September Super Sunday, devotional time will be conducted by Ernestine and Nelta will provide snacks.
          The meeting was adjourned.
          Pastor Dottie closed with prayer.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
