THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL
The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, June 4, 2006 at 7:15 pm. Those present were Chairman Herb Whitlow, Ernestine Adams, Betty Fergola, Diana Halstead, Nelta and Steve Hennessey, Jan Kieffer, Donna Johnston, Neva Martin, Willa Norwood, Carole Stone, Barbara Whitlow, Nancy Rush.
Chairman Herb opened the meeting and thanked everyone for attending.
The devotional time was given by Betty. She shared a reading from the book, Traveling Light, by Max Lucado. The Lord asks all who are carrying heavy burdens to come to Him and He will give you rest. She closed the devotional time with prayer.
The minutes of the May meeting were discussed. The minutes state that the Soul Light Diner would be discontinued for the summer months. That plan has changed and will continue as usual. The next to last paragraph of May’s minutes should read, “Betty and Willa will provide snacks at June’s meeting and Betty will lead devotional time.” Minutes of May’s Church Council meeting were accepted as amended.
The financial report was discussed and accepted as printed.
During committee report time, Ernestine asked anyone receiving their child worker certification card to stop by the office to leave a copy for the church files. She also asked for volunteers to help during children’s Sunday School which is now taking place during the worship hour.
Neva (Mission) announced the next Mission Dinner will be held July 9 after worship service.
During open discussion, Neva reported that at last year’s Annual Conference, it was voted that congregations donate $1 per member for Global AIDS Fund. It was moved that Tecumseh UMC accept the challenge. This effort will be presented and arrangements for making donations made. This item was approved by council.
Carole discussed the ice cream social. Possible dates in August are 13, 20, 27. She will check availability of musical groups and a date will be set to accommodate their schedule.
Herb and Jeanette Johnson attended a conference titled, “This is Not Your Parents’ Offering Plate.” Herb suggested we think – “This is Not My Parents’ Church”. Young people today do not view the opportunity to attend worship services as many of us did. At the August council meeting Herb would like to discuss and share ideas on planning the next year and looking at our church as a whole and ways to bring young people to our church and to Christ. A planning meeting may possibly be scheduled for September. Herb also announced a conference titled “Recentering” at UMC Church of the Resurrection in October.
There will be no council meeting in July. At the August meeting, Herb will conduct the devotional time and Donna will provide snacks.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
