THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL

The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 7:15 pm. Those present were Chairman Herb Whitlow, Pastor Dottie, Ernestine Adams, David Barkley, Carolyn Edwards, Betty Fergola, Nelta and Steve Hennessey, Jan Kieffer, Donna Johnston, Neva Martin, Larry McCammon, Willa Norwood, Barbara Whitlow, Nancy Rush.
The meeting was called to order. David Barkley conducted the devotional time with a reading from Acts 17. He also shared a story of a man who worked as a millwright all his life, and after his death it was discovered that he had written wonderful poetry throughout his life. The question – was he a millwright who wrote poetry or a poet who worked as a millwright. David closed the devotional time with prayer.
The minutes of the October council meeting were reviewed. It was moved by David to approve the minutes and seconded by Steve. Council approved the minutes as printed.
The minutes of the 2006 Annual Church Conference which took place on October 12, 2006 were reviewed. It was moved by Steve to approve the minutes and seconded by Neva. Council approved the minutes as printed.
Larry addressed the financial report. He said that pledge cards for the current stewardship campaign are coming in. So far, 51 cards have been received totaling a pledge of $80,000.
During Committee Time, Betty, reporting for UMW, said that there are seven boxes of apple dumplings left for sale.
Nelta (Worship) reported that there will be a Christmas Eve Communion Service. Plans are being made for New Year’s Eve. There will be a devotional / informal worship time at 7:00 pm and those attending are encouraged to stay as late as they would like. The Worship Committee will invite the Big Springs congregation to join us. Nelta also reminded council that there is always a need for people to sign up to usher and help in the nursery. This committee no longer has a chairperson and calling to fill empty slots will not be done. It has been brought to the committee’s attention that there is concern about applause from the congregation during Sunday worship after prayerful anthems. This will be addressed in the next newsletter and in the bulletin.
David (SPPR) reported that the committee did not meet today, but will meet later in November with District Superintendent Evelyn Fisher.
Neva (Mission) reminded us of the pot luck dinner on December 3 after worship and all are invited to hear Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schowengerdt (former missionaries to Korea) speak at 1:00.
Neva (Health Ministry) reported good attendance at Saturday’s disaster planning meeting. Representatives from the fire department and the county emergency rescue team attended and encouraged the committee to continue work on our plan.
Neva (Mission) suggested that this year’s advent offering be designated for Youthville. There is $100 in the mission budget which can go to Youthville soon to provide funds for Christmas and the advent offering which will be collected each Sunday in December can be sent later.
Carolyn (Congregational Care) indicated that there will be no visitation Sunday in December but are making plans to do so in January.
Ernestine reported that December 12 will be the last Discovery Club until January 9. The Thursday morning exercise group will take a break from December 14 until after the first of the year.
Chairman Herb discussed the January 7 planning session. The session will begin at 3:00 with a break around 5:00. There will be no individual committee meetings on this Super Sunday. Becky Stebbins from the district office will lead the session. Herb and Pastor Dottie will meet with Becky to make plans for the day.
          Council meeting was adjourned.
Herb closed the meeting with prayer.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
