THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL
The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, October 1, 2006 at 7:15 pm. Those present were Chairman Herb Whitlow, Pastor Dottie, Ernestine Adams, David Barkley, Carolyn Edwards, Betty Fergola, Nelta and Steve Hennessey, Jeanette Johnson, Neva Martin, Willa Norwood, Darlene Peck, Jane and Tom Romig, Carole Stone, Barbara Whitlow, Nancy Rush.
Chairman Herb called the meeting to order and thanked all members for attending. He also thanked Carole and Carolyn for snacks.
Carole and Carolyn conducted the devotional time with a reading from the third chapter of Lamentations and a reading from The Upper Room and the book of Psalms. We should enjoy every sunrise as a gift from God and consider each day also a gift. Rejoice and be glad in all God has made and begin each day with thanksgiving.
The minutes of the September council meeting were accepted as printed.
The finance report is included in the agenda packet.
During Committee Time, Nelta (Worship) said that we have a new choir director. The committee is considering the purchase of the CD accompaniment to the red hymnal. The Trustees Committee has approved the purchase and an order will be placed. Decorating the church for the Christmas season will take place at 2:00 pm on November 26. Christmas Eve service will be December 24. Nelta pointed out the continual need for nursery attendants.
Jeanette (Finance) said that the committee had set the dates for the upcoming Stewardship Campaign which will begin October 15 with presentations on three Sundays at worship. Pledge cards will be due at the November 15 service. There was discussion whether to place pledge cards in the newsletter or to send to members in a separate mailing. The finance committee had discussed the possibility of not listing a money amount in the newsletter as had been done in the past. They had also considered listing projects needing to be completed, this list coming from Trustees. Jeanette passed a sign up sheet for those willing to sell Dillon’s certificates after Sunday worship.
Neva (Mission) announced a pot luck dinner after worship on December 3. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schowengerdt, missionaries to Korea, would be our guests and will speak. On November 4 an informational meeting will be held at our church regarding emergency response team training and a work session on a disaster plan.
Pastor Dottie discussed the planning for Church Conference which will take place Thursday, October 12. A light supper will be served at 6:00. The Staff/Parish Relations Committee will meet with District Superintendent Evelyn Fisher at 6:30 pm followed by the business meeting at 7:00 pm. Each committee chairperson should submit a typewritten report to Ernestine ASAP. These reports are needed to prepare our booklet for the business meeting. An offering basket will be made available for donations to the Global AIDS Fund. Our church has reached the goal of $1 per member and any funds collected would be above and beyond the asking.
Pastor Dottie reported that the Committee on Lay Leadership has completed the task of filling committee and chairperson positions. She reminded us that there is no longer an Evangelism Committee as each member of our congregation should be an evangelist.
Herb led discussion about the scheduling of a planning session for the coming year. It was suggested that someone from the conference office be asked to attend and lead the session. Individual committees would not meet but all meet in a general planning session. All new committee members and chairpersons should attend as well as those currently serving. Suggested dates were Super Sunday November 5, the first Sunday in December even though Super Sunday meetings are not normally held that month, but it was decided that the planning session would take place Super Sunday January 7.
David Barkley will conduct devotional time at November council meeting and Barb and Herb will provide snacks.
The meeting was adjourned and Herb thanked everyone for attending.
Pastor Dottie closed with prayer.Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
