THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL

The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 7:15 pm. Those present were Chairman Herb Whitlow, Pastor Dottie, Ernestine Adams, David Barkley, Betty Fergola, Nelta and Steve Hennessey, Jan Kieffer, Neva Martin, Virginia Martinson, Larry McCammon, Willa Norwood, Jane and Tom Romig, Carole Stone, Nancy Rush.
Chairman Herb called the meeting to order and thanked Nelta for snacks.
Ernestine led the devotional time with a reading from The Upper Room and the book of Genesis encouraging us all to be peacemakers. She also read from The Discipline – God speaks to us in silence. When you need the wisdom to make a decision will you be listening or speaking. She closed the devotional time with prayer.
The minutes of the August meeting were approved as printed.
During Committee Time, Nelta reported for the Worship Committee that choir practice would begin September 21. A nucleus of singers or an ensemble will try to be arranged for each Sunday’s worship service. The committee is still seeking a choir director.
Dave Barkley (SPRC) reported that his committee had completed the pastor assessment and will begin working on salaries.
Neva (Health Ministry) will meet with Carolyn Tindall, Pat and Jenny Buss, to prepare grant applications for the services of a parish nurse.
Ernestine (Education) submitted the report from her committee as printed in the agenda.
Nelta shared a plan to attend the “Singing Christmas Tree” presentation in Liberty, Mo. on December 1. A bus has been arranged. The cost is approximately $30 and will include dinner. First choice will be made to choir members and then open to others in the congregation.
Finance and Stewardship Committee has finalized plans for the Friendship Dinner on September 10 and calling lists were distributed to committee members to contact those not yet indicating attendance.
Steve (Trustees) reported that bids were being taken to paint windows and soffit on the north side and work to be done on the roof of the canopy. The counter top in the parsonage has been replaced.
The treasurer’s report was accepted as printed.
During Open Discussion, Herb would like to arrange a planning session on Super Sunday, October 1. Pastor Dottie pointed out that Church Conference would be held on October 12 and committees would be busy preparing reports for that evening. The planning session will be considered for November. Perhaps meeting could begin at 3:00 pm, break for snacks, and forego regular committee meetings. Pastor Dottie would like each committee to bring to the planning session, one idea or plan of something they could do to be a witness for Christ in the coming year.
Pastor Dottie said that Church Conference will be held on Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 pm. At 6:30 pm District Superintendent Evelyn Fisher will meet with SPRC and at 6:00 pm perhaps a light meal could be provided for all committee persons involved in Church Conference. Thursday evening is the regular gathering time for the Soul Light Diner which will not take place that week. Each committee will need to submit a written report highlighting activities of the year. Deadline for these reports will be announced.
Ernestine mentioned the “Fanning the Flame” Conference to be held October 14. The cost is $25. There will be numerous workshops offered that day. Registration is due October 1.
Pastor Dottie reminded council the celebration of the appointment of District Superintendent Evelyn Fisher at Holton First UMC on September 10 at 4:00 pm. A reception will follow.
Herb thanked all council members for attending this evening.
Carolyn and Carole will provide snacks and devotions at the October council meeting.
Herb closed the meeting with prayer.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
