2009 Annual Church Conference
Tecumseh United Methodist Church
December 14, 2009Church conference was held at University United Methodist Church. District Superintendent Evelyn Fisher welcomed all attendees to the clustered church conference. The five churches represented were Asbury Mt.Olive UMC, Grantville UMC, Kansas Avenue UMC, Tecumseh UMC, and University UMC. The group joined in hymn singing and prayer. Evelyn introduced the pastors who would be presiding over the individual conference meetings.
A spokesman from each church gave examples of how God has been at work or has blessed their church. Evelyn pointed out how we all sometimes become content with the way things are and forget to look beyond our routines. She announced that during the year 2010 a mystery visitor would be attending a worship service at each church and would report back the feelings of a newcomer at the service. This plan is simply to enrich each congregation’s welcoming atmosphere.
Evelyn read from the first chapter of Luke and shared a message.
The pastor of each church stated a goal for his/her congregation for the
Year 2010.
Evelyn told information about the Washburn Campus Ministry. A survey was taken from Washburn students and a desire was expressed for a sand volleyball court. The campus ministry adopted this as one of their goals. They have raised enough monies to build the court on the ministry’s property and additional monies will go toward the purchase of a sign. An offering bucket was passed for donations.
At this time the group adjourned to separate meeting rooms to conduct the conference business of their own church.
Rev. Dr. Max Clayton from First United Methodist Church presided over the Tecumseh United Methodist Church’s conference reporting.
Rev. Dr. Clayton noted that all committee reports were included in the conference packet and in good order. He asked if minutes from the 2008 conference had been approved by administrative council. Those minutes had been voted upon at our January 2009 meeting.
Virginia Martinson, chairperson of Staff/Parish Relations Committee, referred to the printed report and moved to accept the pastor’s compensation package. No second was needed as it had previously been approved by TUMC’s finance committee and administrative council. The package was unanimously approved by voice vote.
Rev. Dr. Clayton and those attending reviewed the finance and pastor’s report.
Attention was then given to the Committee on Nomination and Leadership Development printed report listing those lay members willing to serve on committees in the work of Tecumseh UMC for the 2010 year. There were no nominations from the floor and was unanimously approved by voice vote.
Rev. Dr. Clayton then directed review of the Lay Speaker’s Annual Report as prepared by Neva Martin. By unanimous voice vote Neva will be recognized as a certified lay speaker for the 2010 year.
At conclusion of the conference reporting session, Neva Martin moved to adjourn and was seconded by Sis Long.
At this time, representatives from all churches joined back together in the University UMC sanctuary. District Superintendent Fisher shared a few announcements.
She realizes that the cluster church conference sessions are perhaps unfamiliar to those of us involved and would like to receive feedback.
The group joined together in another hymn sing and Evelyn dismissed 2009 Annual Church Conference with a blessing.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
