Alpha & Omega
Revelation 1:4b-8I started as a freshman at Wichita University in 1958, at the very young age of fifteen. (That’s a story which I’ll save for another time!) I had been in this country for three years, and still quite naïve about many things. Therefore, it was puzzling to receive an invitation to a “sorority rush”. Yes, you read it correctly – sorority, not fraternity. Evidently, the folks at the sororities were confused by the name ‘Piet”, and assumed that such a name must surely go with a girl. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I had no idea what a sorority was. I can’t recall the details about how I found out whether or not I should attend this ‘rush’ event, but I didn’t go. I was too embarrassed, and too afraid. In retrospect, I regret not having a bit more courage. It would surely have been fun to show up and watch the faces of the people who sent me that invitation.
Well, that’s a long-winded way of telling you that ever since that experience, I have this strong association with those Latin sorority names. (You know, names such as Alpha Delta Gamma Epsilon Omega Psi Sorority). As a result, whenever I hear or read the words from Revelation about Alpha and Omega, I can’t keep myself from making that connection, even though it has noting to do with the scripture or its meaning. But then, I started to think some more about all of that. I really like the passage from Revelation, and I really like the way it starts out: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come. (4b) What wonderful words of love. The writer goes on to share with us his joy : To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father (5-6). He made us to be a kingdom, all of us together, with Christ as King and all of us as a community of priests, in service to God.. And it is that God who is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. We, the people, are the great sorority and fraternity, the great priesthood of all humanity, who exult: to him be the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (6) So you see, even though it may be a bit twisted, I make a connection. We’re all invited to this ‘rush’. We need not be embarrassed, or afraid, but just come - join the holy priesthood, be a part of the great Kingdom, a part of the Alpha and the Omega.
